Helping Our Community

Gordon Stirrett Community Service Award

Ensuring that young people become community focused is an important goal behind the $150,000 we committed to develop the Gordon Stirrett Community Service Award.

Gordon Stirrett with the Girl Scouts of Halifax

The Award is a partnership with Halifax Grammar School. It provides $1000 to their student-led projects that demonstrate the ability to leverage the money to raise awareness or funds for the cause of their choice.

Students have performed an impressive array of impassioned projects with the award. From a local initiative to get underprivileged children more active by providing free skates and skating lessons, to making it safer for girls around the world to get an education.

One of the most heartwarming initiatives may be the ongoing meal service the students provide to families that make use of the Ronald McDonald House in Halifax, which offers a comfortable place for families of patients at the IWK.

Started in 2008, the Award continues to see a range in scope of the projects presented by the students. We are eager to see how they will continue to take advantage of this opportunity to build their project management, leadership, fundraising and event planning skills to support the causes they believe in.
